Thank you for your interest in our department鈥檚 graduate聽training, which consists of both Ph.D. and M.A. programs. Our graduate program has a longstanding reputation for attracting and training first-rate students with a commitment to social justice and a passion for changing the world. Our talented and widely-published聽faculty聽are committed to strong research, mentoring, and teaching. Many of our faculty and graduate students are public sociologists who collaborate with groups working for social change, and whofrequently appear in the national and international media.

We are a vibrant and supportive community that embraces聽methodological pluralism and values high-caliber research that makes a difference in the world. Our聽Departmental Seminar Series聽provides an ongoing forum for exposing students and faculty to cutting-edge research, and offers a great opportunity for graduate students to dialogue and develop relations with a wide variety of important sociologists. We also have two departmental working groups: one in Environmental Sociology; and a second in Work, Health, Aging, Family, and Life course (WHAFL). Working groups provide a forum for graduate students and faculty with common research interests to share and get feedback on their work in progress.

The faculty and graduate students in our department have聽wide-ranging interests, and use both qualitative and quantitative methodologies in their research. Our聽faculty clusters聽page provides a sense of our leading concentrations of faculty interest and expertise. We have particularly strong concentrations of expertise in the areas of: Aging and the Life Course; Environmental Sociology; Global and Transnational Sociology; Health and Medicine; and Race and Inequality.聽
