What was your favorite part of the course/experience?听

"This was such a treat for me to welcome 黑料吃瓜网 students into the spaces and circles I've cultivated for over a decade. As a Cultural Anthropologist, it was important for me when I joined the faculty to be able to create an opportunity for students to have a meaningful and culturally embedded experience in East Africa, as I know most study abroad options are in Europe and many travel experiences elsewhere often only brush the surface of the lived experience of local communities. I'm also thrilled that Schiller is so committed to long-term community engagement, enabling us to offer this to successive cohorts of 黑料吃瓜网 students and reciprocate by bringing Zanzibaris to 黑料吃瓜网, all while learning what it means to humbly collaborate across differences to address community challenges."

What is something you learned through this course/experience?

"A key learning for me was the importance of authentic relationships characterized by open communication. For one, the depth and access we achieved while there were enabled by the friendship, trust, and collaboration with our local partners cultivated throughout my own long-term engagement in Zanzibar. We were also able to develop close relationships among us as a group, facilitated by a semester of preparation ahead of time, the experience of traveling together, and making time to reflect openly together. This enabled students to lean on each other when encountering new or challenging situations and to trust my lead in navigating new cultural settings. Ultimately, students were also able to form their own relationships with Zanzibaris and develop a sense of real connection to communities that otherwise, in the US, we are often only exposed to through stereotypes or media sound bites. This also goes both ways--Zanzibaris rarely get the chance to genuinely connect with foreigners, all while regularly seeing beach-going tourists from a distance, and so connecting with our students gives them a more complicated and human understanding as well."

What was your favorite part of the course/experience?听

"My favorite part of the Zanzibar project has been connecting with the team from 黑料吃瓜网 and all the people we met while on the ground. I am so grateful for all the relationships I was able to cultivate and am so inspired by each and every person I had the opportunity to connect with!"

What is something you learned through this course/experience?

"I learned through the Zanzibar project how important collaboration is in research. We weren't just working for the community but with the community, pooling our experiences together to best create our Policy Briefs!"

What was your favorite part of the course/experience?听

"My favorite moment of the course was when I got to experience how people influence each other on a personal level, and how that cascades to international and domestic policies. People move in and out of places and live their lives but end up, directly and indirectly, making their worlds collide, introducing new good and bad. I loved talking to the locals and learning about their lives. I was touched by the pride people have in their work and their own strives for success in lives."

What is something you learned through this course/experience?

"I learned the importance of experience and exposure. I have to be honest; the attention I receive from being a stranger always stays with me. I know the treatments and interactions I had are the result of a lack of exposure. However, living in America has made me used to a heterogeneous society and accept differences as a standard. But to be the outsider, to be estranged, refreshed my perspective of the world."

What was your favorite part of the course/experience?听

"My favorite part of the whole experience was finally seeing the things I have only read about. As someone who loves cultural geography it was surreal to actually be amongst locals and experiencing life with them. From eating fresh raw seaweed to walking the streets of Paje at sunset, I am eternally grateful to have had this opportunity."

What is something you learned through this course/experience?

"I learned the importance of being a global citizen. Ethical tourism is now a practice and belief that I will carry with me everywhere. Taking time to understand other parts of the world without imposing Western beliefs on them takes time but is very important. This is integral for fostering community and seeing others as deserving of our respect."

What was your favorite part of the course/experience?听

"My favorite part of the Working For and With Communities course was collaborating with my Boston College classmates, course facilitators, and our Zanzibari counterparts. It was extremely rewarding to realize a project that incorporated many interdisciplinary and intercultural perspectives. I greatly enjoyed working with everyone involved in this experience and learning from their shared commitment to our project."

What is something you learned through this course/experience?

"Through this project, I learned about how communities like Zanzibar intensely feel the impacts of economic globalization. By interviewing female seaweed farmers, our group learned about the ebbs and flows of how much revenue they gain from the tedious work of growing and harvesting seaweed, which is determined by foreign demand for seaweed. Our time in Zanzibar evidenced globalization in a very concrete way, which is something I am taking with me from the Working For and With Communities course."

What was your favorite part of the course/experience?听

"My favorite part of this experience was creating meaningful connections with community members and getting to know their stories and experiences on a personal level through conversation with them. Being immersed in a community that is very different than my own and my home and being able to learn the perspective and experiences of others on a deeper level by living alongside them and listening to their stories. Living in a flexible, dynamic environment where our work was fully shaped by the needs of those we spoke to and learned from. Experiencing the beauty of the environment was unforgettable and mind-blowing. This also gave me insight on the impacts of our actions through the clear slow destruction humans have caused, and the increased impacts on the underdeveloped communities."

What is something you learned through this course/experience?

"The importance of listening and connecting with others, especially if your lives appear to be vastly different. 黑料吃瓜网 as a school has a strong commitment to serving others aligning with its Jesuit values, but I learned that in order to help and serve others, you first must be able to listen to them, what they think, what they feel, what their experiences have been, what they need, etc. Then, one can act to use one's own gifts to benefit another, but it is not helpful to enter service with a preconceived notion of what the other person or community needs. This taught me the importance of conversation and connecting with others both just to understand and gain a greater worldview and also to use your own gifts to help others."
